Cluster Sampling

What is cluster sampling? Why is cluster sampling used in marketing research?

Cluster sampling is used in statistics when natural groups are evident in a sample population – for instance, human beings are naturally clustered into households, so in lieu of sampling individuals cluster sampling could be used to sample households in order to observe individuals.

Cluster sampling is common in marketing research because it is generally cheaper than other methods though it has a higher sampling error.
