Hot Pluggable

What is hot pluggable? What is a hot pluggable device?

A hot pluggable device refers to a computer component that interacts with system software yet can be added or removed while the computer is running and without rebooting. The most common example of hot pluggable devices are peripheral components like a printer that can be plugged-in while the computer is running and then used seamlessly without rebooting; however, more integral components can also be hot pluggable.

The act of adding or removing a hot pluggable device is called hot plugging. Hot swappable devices are those that can be added or removed while the computer is running yet do not interact with system software, such as a computer fan.
