What is NASDAQ? How are NASDAQ stocks traded?

NASDAQ, which stands for National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations System, is an electronic stock exchange owned and operated by the NASDAQ OMX Group.

Unlike the NYSE which as a physical trading floor, NASDAQ trades were traditionally conducted via telephone – thus the NASDAQ was more of a ‘dealer network’ than an exchange. In the wake of the 1987 stock market crash, NASDAQ also instituted the Small Order Execution System (SOES) which provides an electronic method for entering trades.
