What is EDGAR? How do you search SEC filings?
EDGAR, the Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis and Retrieval (EDGAR) system, is a streamlined method of filing acceptance and cataloging used by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
The SEC instituted EDGAR in an attempt to disseminate time-sensitive materials to all investors in a quick and fair way. All domestic, publicly traded companies have been required to use EDGAR for SEC filings since May 6, 1996 unless a hardship was cited. There remain particular filings that need not be filed using EDGAR such as Form 144, which is a notice of proposed sale of unregistered securities.
