What is the Stock Exchange Hong Kong?
The Stock Exchange Hong Kong is the main stock exchange of Hong Kong where shares of companies are exchanged. At the end of 2007, the Stock Exchange Hong Kong had a $2.7 trillion total market capitalization for the more than 1,200 companies that were listed in the exchange. This made the Stock Exchange Hong Kong the third largest Asian stock exchange with only the Tokyo Stock Exchange and the Shanghai Stock Exchange being larger.
What is the history of the Stock Exchange Hong Kong?
The exchange was founded in 1891 and has remained the dominant stock exchange domain in Hong Kong since. The exchange has coexisted, competed and merged with several other stock exchanges over its history. For example, soon after the conclusion of World War II in 1947 the Hong Kong Stock Exchanged merged with the Hong Kong Stock Brokers Association. In 2000, the Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing become the holding company of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.
What index is used to track the Stock Exchange Hong Kong?
An index of the 45 largest companies, in terms of market capitalization, is often used to chart the movement of the exchange. This index is called the the Hang Seng Index.
